PILLARS – Reacting to ambient radioactivity
An immersive installation reacting to natural ambient radioactivity. Each pillar is equipped with a radioactivity sensor that generates a light wave upon impact with an ionized particle, as well as the characteristic click of Geiger counters emitted by the sensor.
PILLARS, a site-specific installation, reminds us of the natural and ordinary presence of radioactivity without human intervention, a phenomenon all the more relevant in the context of Landerneau due to its high level of radioactivity resulting from the concentration of granite in the region. PILLARS is a reflection on deterioration, viewed through the lens of atomic nuclei disintegration. It explores the similarities between the mineral and organic worlds. It questions the relationship between the decay of matter and the degeneration of the mind and human societies, and also re-evaluates our relationship to time and our ephemeral existence in the face of our planet.
PILLARS is a light installation that allows us to visualize the ambient radioactivity that surrounds us. This installation follows in the footsteps of the work Instability of Nature, which initially conceals its true nature and immediately alters the viewer’s perspective once its purpose is revealed, provoking a striking mixture of anxiety and fascination.
PILLARS was created for the exhibition PRESENCE, supported by Artpoint, and presented to the public at the Galerie de Rohan in Landerneau.
PILLARS – Réagir à la radioactivité ambiante
Une installation immersive réagissant à la radioactivité ambiante naturelle. Chacun des piliers est équipé d’un capteur de radioactivité générant une onde lumineuse lors de l’impact d’une particule ionisée, mais aussi le clic caractéristique des compteurs geiger, émis par le capteur.
PILLARS, une installation in situ, nous rappelle la présence naturelle et ordinaire de la radioactivité sans intervention humaine, d’autant plus intéressante dans le contexte de Landerneau en raison de son niveau élevé de radioactivité dû à la concentration de granit dans la région. PILLARS est une réflexion sur la détérioration, au travers du prisme de la désintégration des noyaux atomiques. Une exploration des similitudes entre le monde minéral et le monde organique. Un questionnement sur les relations entre le délabrement de la matière et la dégénérescence de l’esprit et des sociétés humaines, mais également une remise à l’échelle de notre rapport au temps, de notre éphéméréité face à notre planète.
PILLARS est un dispositif lumineux permettant de visualiser la radioactivité ambiante qui nous entoure. Cette installation s’inscrit dans la lignée de l’œuvre Instability of Nature, qui cache sa véritable nature au premier abord, et modifie immédiatement le regard de l’observateur dès lors que son propos est révélé, en provoquant un étonnant mélange d’angoisse et de fascination.
PILLARS a été réalisée pour l’exposition PRESENCE, soutenue par Artpoint, et présentée au public à la Galerie de Rohan de Landerneau.
