Why Bother With Reality?

Why Bother With Reality?

Why Bother With Reality?

A connected installation featuring two women face to face, wearing virtual reality headsets, and a storm of burnt banknotes controlled by the real-time price variations of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Two women physically close, yet distant. Two women unable to see each other while immersed in virtual reality, and unaware of the collapsing world around them.

Why Bother With Reality? uses four electronically controlled fans, reflecting in real-time the price and capitalization variations of the most popular cryptocurrencies: Bitcoin, Litecoin, Etherum and XRP. Using an electronic board, a WI-FI connection and a dedicated server script, the installation is able to monitor the variations and to adjust the fan speeds to reflect the amount of exchanges.

Why Bother With Reality? questions the popular belief that technology will save us, and solve every problems that we, as the human race, are facing. Meanwhile, confronted with social inequalities, wars, loss of biodiversity, climate change, and the limits of unbridled consumerism and aggressive capitalism, we lost ourselves in a sea of screens, where truths are drowned in an overdose of fake news and entertainment. We built a border between the reality of the world and what we are willing to perceive, we locked ourselves in the Plato’s cave. The world is burning as we are diving into alternate realities.

Why Bother With Reality? also questions the news paradigms of human interactions in the age of social media, through the way we see ourselves, but also the way we reveal ourselves to others in this image driven era. Here, these two identical women are based on a 3D scan of the Nymph Untying Her Sandal (1824-30), by artist John Gibson, a sculpture that was once considered vacuous, emptily pretty, and a little too suspended from reality…
